Building Inspector I or II
The City of Ellensburg Community Development Department has a vacancy for a Building Inspector. This position will be filled at either an Inspector I or II level depending on experience.
The person filling this position will perform residential and commercial plan review, carefully review application materials, conduct timely, accurate, and thorough field inspections, ensure compliance with adopted building codes, fire codes, and other development regulations. Work with City staff, boards/commissions, Council members, customers, design/engineering professionals, developers, contractors, and members of the public in a courteous, collaborative, solution-oriented manner.
The Building Inspector II classification is distinguished from the Building Inspector I classification by its advanced certification requirements and more complex duties and responsibilities.

Salary: Building Inspector I - $6,617 - $7,484/month OR
Building Inspector II - $7,125 - $8,060/month

BUILDING INSPECTOR I:
REQUIRED EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED), or equivalency
- Formal training/education and/or at least two (2) years of experience in related field such as architecture, construction management, building construction technician, or journey-level trade experience in carpentry, plumbing or HVAC
- Frontline customer service experience
- Please note: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the above requirements as determined by management
- Associate’s degree or vocational certificate in building inspection, architecture, construction management, building/construction-related technology, or civil engineering.
- Experience in building construction and/or governmental construction inspection.
- ICC certification in building inspection, plans examination, or similar ICC certification.
- Bilingual English/Spanish
- Must possess a valid Washington State driver’s license by date of hire and must maintain an insurable driving record
- ICC Certification for Residential Building Inspector and Residential Plans Examiner within twelve (12) months of date of hire.
- ICC Certification for Commercial Building Inspector and Commercial Plans Examiner within twenty-four (24) months of date of hire.
- Other licenses, certifications, and requirements may become necessary to meet the business needs of the department.
REQUIRED EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:
- Associate’s degree or vocational certificate in building inspection, architecture, construction management, building/construction-related technology, or civil engineering.
- Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in mechanical/plumbing/building plan review and building inspections, some commercial and industrial inspections, code compliance/enforcement, and permitting requirements.
- Frontline customer service experience.

- International Existing Building Code (IEBC)
- Historic building plan review and inspections
- Building Official duties
- Bilingual English/Spanish

- ICC Certification for Commercial and Residential Building Inspector and Commercial and Residential Plans Examiner at time of hire.
- ICC Certification for Mechanical Inspector and Plumbing Inspector is required or must be obtained within twenty-four (24) months from date of hire.
